State of California to Open Online Rental Assistance Portal on March 15, 2021 at 5 p.m.
Mobilehome parkowners and residents can begin applying today for Covid-19-related rental assistance through the State of California. This program, administered by the California Department of Housing and Community Development, will pay eligible parkowners 80% of the past due rent owed by eligible households. The application process opens at 5 p.m. today and is accessible through the state’s Housing Is Key website: https://housing.ca.gov/covid_rr/index.html.
The rental assistance money comes from a pandemic-recovery package approved by Congress in 2020. It includes $1.4 billion that went to the state, while $1.2 billion is headed to “entitlement districts,” which are local jurisdictions with populations over 200,000. Applications for the state’s $1.4 billion allotment open March 15, 2021. Some cities and counties have already begun accepting applications for the remaining $1.2 billion.
Where and when you should apply for rental relief depends on the location of your mobilehome park. In most counties, parkowners and residents should apply through the state’s online portal. Some counties and cities, however, require that applications be submitted locally.
