WMA Victory! Harmful Assembly Bill 566 vetoed by the governor.
October 11, 2009
Attention WMA members: Great news!
Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed the harmful mobilehome park conversion bill, Assembly Bill 566 (Nava). He noted in his veto message,
To the Members of the California State Assembly:
I am returning Assembly Bill 566 without my signature.
While the intent of this bill is to preserve low-income housing, the fact that a majority of mobilehome park residents do not support a conversion is not an appropriate means for determining the legitimacy of a conversion. The law is not intended to allow park residents to block a request to subdivide.
For this reason I am unable to sign this bill.
Sincerely,
Arnold Schwarzenegger
While this is a significant win, the fight is far from over. We anticipate that resident advocate groups will attempt to push this issue through sometime in the future.
Nevertheless, WMA worked tirelessly to defeat AB 566 and this is a victory for the industry. We would like to extend our thanks to the many members who sent letters to lawmakers and to the Governor. We couldn’t have done it without you.
